| Due
to a complete loss of natural movement ability, many bedridden patients must face
substantial physical and psychological limitations and ailments. Multiple daily
mobilization of the lower extremities by a physiotherapist can only be realized
in very few cases. Here, the doctor or physiotherapist has the possibility to
make use of the MOTOmed letto, the motorized and computerized MovementTherapySystem
for the bed, in order to support the therapy.
|
Multiple daily movement therapy with the MOTOmed letto can have the following training goals:
| Support
of physiotherapy: How can the MovementTherapySystem support physical/occupational therapy? Passive mobilization of bedridden patients (e.g. coma or respiration) tends to cause substantial physical strain on the therapist. With the MOTOmed letto MovementTherapySystem, patient mobilization several times a day is smoothly possible even on the week ends. The provided mobilization is extremely important for many bodily functions of the patient. Experience shows that patients are more loose after alternating harmonious movements with the MOTOmed. Manual physical therapy afterwards can usually be done more effectively, economically and more patient oriented. Patients with fear of movement can gently be introduced to active movement therapy by the comfortable smooth movements of the motorized MOTOmed. Reciprocal movement patterns can be initiated.
| Prevention
of decubitus and thrombosis Is the MOTOmed movement therapy suitable to prevent thrombosis and decubitus? The MOTOmed therapy helps to prevent thrombosis and decubitus (without negative side effects) et al. by activating the venous system. Cycling-similar exercise can increase the blood backflow rate in legs and pelvis area by up to 400 % compared to rest position. The number of cycled revolutions determines the efficiency of movement. Own active muscle work-out only contributes at subordinated level. Most patients show their maximum blood backflow rate already after cycling 5 minutes. This improved oxygen supply of the blood allows a better oxygen supply of the brain, the extremities and the whole body. Cold, painful legs can become pleasantly warm and painless due to the stimulation of the blood circulation.

Muscle tone
and spasticity The regular loosening up of the muscles results in many cases in a permanently reduced muscle tone.
| Range
of motion, prevention of contractures How does the MOTOmed movement benefit the flexibility of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints? Muscles and joints shorten and tendons harden if they are not moved regularly. The joints also get increasingly stiff. As a result, it becomes more and more difficult to bend and stretch the lower extremities. The MOTOmed letto allows for example the legs to be stretched and bent hundreds of times in 10 minutes. This helps to "lubricate" the joints regularly and to make the muscles more flexible.
| Bladder
and bowel function Does the MOTOmed movement also benefit the bowel and bladder function? Bowel problems: Normally the abdominal muscles assist the bowel movements. However, due to paralysis and lack of movement, the abdominal muscles can become inactive and therefore unhelpful to the digestive process. Due to the indirect effect of the MOTOmed training on the abdominal muscles, bowel movement can be stimulated. Bladder problems: These problems are often aggravated by tension (spasticity) in the bladder, pelvic floor and thigh muscles. This tension can be eased within a few minutes of passive MOTOmed training which in turn can have a positive effect on emptying the bladder.
| Muscle
strength and coordination promote walking ability Does the MOTOmed letto also enable patients confined to bed to apply residual muscle strength and thus make it possible to train the physical stamina and coordination? Studies show that staying 9 days in bed reduces the fitness of a person by 20 % and the size of the heart by 10 %. However, the weaker the blood circulation and the muscular system get, the more restricted the movement becomes. Many patients confined to bed have some residual muscle strength. However, it is sometimes concealed or inhibited by spasticity. To make a complete movement, this residual strength is often insufficient or it fades away too quickly. The MOTOmed letto has a special function to help rediscover this residual strength and to train it: The MOTOmed ServoCycling. This function works similar to a power-assisted steering system in a car. Thus, thanks to the MOTOmed ServoCycling, it is in many cases possible to perform a complete and fluid cycle movement even with minimal muscle strength. If you maintain or build up residual muscle strength also your homecare gets easier. A mobilization in a relaxed position is possible. Movements that had been lost for a long time will be initiated again. Patients with stronger residual muscle strength can even cycle against light resistances in finely adjustable gears. In the long run ServoCycling leads to active cycling with own muscle strength. This contributes to promote the walking ability, particularly for patients with problems to get moved in the early morning. The coordination of the leg muscles will be improved as a further benefit of the MOTOmed Movement Therapy.
| Influencing
the general patient condition Which improvements have been realized concerning the general condition of patients confined to bed following the MOTOmed Movement Therapy? The ability to move the legs continuously has a positive effect on the mental well-being of immobile patients. Usually the sensory stimulation and sensibilisation by the movement therapy improves the general patient condition. At the same time COB-patients confined to bed have shown that purely passive as well as additional active exercise with the MOTOmed increases the oxygen uptake, respiratory frequency and respiratory minute volume.
| Save
time and cost How does the MOTOmed movement influence the duration of therapy? Additional daily movement therapy with the MOTOmed letto is supposed to accelerate and improve the anastasis and to allow an earlier mobilization (e.g. for stroke patients). Primarily, the MOTOmed Therapy should prepare, facilitate and support subsequent therapies.
